General FAQ

Q: SUMO100+ is available as Bi-Color, Daylight and Tungsten. The Daylight and Tungsten models have both a fixed Color Temperature with no Color Temperature slider controls. What is their fixed Color Temperature respectively?
A: The Tungsten model has 3000K and the Daylight model has 5700K. Upon special request, the Daylight and Tungsten models can be built at 2800K and 6500K.

Q: Do all SUMOLIGHT fixtures emit Infrared?
A: They emit minute amounts of infrared.

Q: For both SUMOSPACE and SUMO100+, is there any specific reason you do not offer any barn doors?
A: Multiple LED barn doors usually cast nasty shadows. In this instance, we offer various Light Shaping Tools that are better suited to control spill light. With the addition of our interchangeable lenses, you have little to no spill light, that is why barn doors are not used with SUMOLIGHT fixtures.

Q: How long does a 100W battery at 100% & 50% Intensity last for?
A: At 100% Intensity, a 100W battery will last a little over one hour, since the fixture only uses a maximum of 88W. At 50% Intensity, the fixture consumes 11W, this will stretch the battery power consumption out to approximately 10 hours.

Q: Does it dim linearly?
A: No, it does not dim linearly. It is basically an exponential curve.

Q: The Data sheet of SUMOSPACE states ‘RDM, Ethernet and Wireless Interface’. Is it possible to control the Color Temperature or dimming of the SUMOSPACE over Wifi, Bluetooth or through any other external controller?
A: You can control the fixture over DMX/ RDM, Ethernet or Wifi. You can use any external DMX or RDM console, also Ethernet. Wifi can run over an additional router.

Q: With SUMO100+, if two units are connected via DMX cable, and ‘Master’ and ‘Slave’ are set respectively, can I control ‘Dimming’ and ‘Color Temperature’ (for Bi-Color) from the ‘Master’ unit without any additional device? Do I need a special DMX cable?
A: With Master and Slave set, you are capable of controlling up to 256 fixtures without an additional device, with the use of a DMX cable. RDM is just a modern protocol that runs over the DMX cable. Basically, RDM is a two-way protocol, whereas DMX is only one way. RDM can send data from the fixture to the console, DMX can not.

You can control more units, approximately 256 with one fixture without the need of any additional device, with a DMX cable. RDM is a protocol enhancement that allows bi-directional communication between the SUMO100+ fixture and/or system controller, with an attached RDM compliant device over a standard DMX line.

Q: The SMUO100+ (Bi-Color model) uses the Color Temperature of LEDs initially with 2700K (for Tungsten) and 6000K (for Daylight). These are mixed to achieve a range from 3000K to 5700K. The SUMOSPACE data-sheet states its Color Temperature ranges from 2800K to 6500K. This has 800K more than 5700K of SUMO100+. Is there a specific reason for this?
A: The SUMO100+ was originally built with a range of 3000-5700K. The SUMOSPACE is our latest product and the range was extended to 2800-6500K.

Q: SUMO100+ has a slider to adjust ‘Dimming’ and ‘Color Temperature’. SUMOSPACE has buttons for those control. Any specific reason for this?
A: Like the previous question, SUMOSPACE is our latest fixture with the latest functions. We were able to develop an improved control interface with a display, which we could not do before.

Q: The website shows that there is a ‘TWINKIT’ for SUMO100+. This is not in the Price Catalogue. Was it discontinued? Or is this kit only available upon special request? If so, what is its price?
A: This is not shown in the Price Catalogue. This product is only available upon request.

Q: If I have two SUMO100+ fixtures, can I combine them to make a ‘TWINKIT’?
A: Yes. To convert you two SUMO100+ fixtures into a TWINKIT, the TWINKIT Yoke Kit is required. As previously stated, this product is only available upon request. For all other inquiries relating to the TWINKIT and it’s accessories, like the Twin Softbox, short DMX cable and Y-splitter cable (custom cable to make the TWINKIT behave like one unit).

Q: Can you combine multiple SUMOSPACE fixtures to make a MASTER and SLAVE setting like the SUMO100+?
A: Of course! This also depends on the customer and their needs. If you use the SUMOSPACE as a spacelight, then they need the SUMOSPACE Hangers to hang the fixture. In a classical spacelight configuration, you would need the SUMOSPACE Reflector, Target and Skirt.

If you want to use it on a stand, a Yoke Kit will be required.

Q: Can you attach two or more SUMOSPACE fixtures together, like the SMUO100+ with a TWINKIT?
A: At present, we don’t sell a mount to attach them together, but the prototype is in motion. The SUMOSPACE fixtures are hexagonal. It was specifically designed this way so that an infinite number of SUMOSPACE fixtures can be combined.

Q: What is the effective distance to minimize multiple shadows when using SUMOSPACE?
A: Since there is no Diffusion Plate for SUMOSPACE, the effective distance to minimize multiple shadows (whilst using a Diffuser) is approx. 45 cm. The depth of our Reflector for the SUMOSPACE is 45 cm.

Q: What is the maximum frame rate on can film at while using SUMO100+ or SUMOSPACE? Is there a confirmed test done by either SUMOLIGHT or the customer?
A: Our clients have shot with the SUMO100+ at 150,000 fps. Since SUMO100+ is flicker free, the fixture can be shot at infinite frame rates. This also is the same for the SUMOSPACE. At this point in time, we have not tested and can not confirm the maximum frame rate one can film at with the SUMOSPACE.

Q: What is the warranty period? E.g. Is it one year, two years etc.?
A: We don’t have an official warranty in place yet. Currently, our unofficial warranty is two years. However, if any part of your product becomes non-functioning, ship it back to us and we will repair or replace it. Note the “non-functioning” part – this means that the warranty does not cover cosmetic wear that does not affect the safety or function of your product. In our opinion, a little scratch or knick here and there is nothing more than bragging rights that you’ve been having some fun with your SUMOLIGHT products. But if something breaks, don’t worry one bit. We’re behind you all the way.

Q: Other than LED calibration, will our dealers be able to repair most of the service matters locally?
A: Theoretically, any repair (not including the replacement of single LEDs) can be done locally. You can remove any electronic component. We recommend that you send it back to the original distributor or to SUMOLIGHT GmbH so an expert can carry out the professional repair service/s.

Q: In the manual of SUMO100+, The ambient operating temperature is stated between -10 to +35 Celsius. Has it been improved? Because some other competitors claim to have an operating range of -20 to +45 and even greater.
A: The SUMO100+ was used by CBS in Baghdad at 47°C in the shadow/shade, without problems. Here is a nice article that you can read at TVB Europe.

Q: SUMOLIGHT mentioned plans to offer various Light Shaping Tools (Soft-Bank etc.) for third party products. Could you give me any lead on what items will be available as third party products? What is a rough timescale of when they will be available?
A: Unfortunately, at this point in time, we have no fixed plans for third party products.

Q: Would you share any product road maps in the years to come?
A: There is no fixed road map for public review. If you would like to know more about SUMOLIGHT and other information relating to our products, please feel free to follow us on Facebook and/or sign up to our Newsletter
